We have been reading books about neighborhoods that are very different from ours, books such as “Baby Goes to market” and “Last Stop on Market Street”. The children are continuing to learn about and appreciate the people, places, and things in our neighborhood.

We have been counting beads and buttons, playing dice fitness and playing memory game “Memory games are good for your brain!” The children were invited to make observational painting and paper models of freshly cut daffodils.

The artists and scientists have been enjoying the art making process under the rain and use their knowledge of the behavior of the ink from the markers when they bleed on the wet paper. Pennsylvania's most famous groundhog emerged from his burrow on a snowy Tuesday morning and saw his shadow, declaring there would be six more weeks of winter. The Sandpipers scientists were very curious about the 135-years old American and Canadian tradition of the Groundhog Day. We are aware of the fact that children’s literature is the basis for launching conversations about bias and equity in the areas of race, gender identity, family structure and ability. The children know to say 'stop' if they see that someone is being mean or unfair to others. We went to the park and we played there', 'My brother told me that Martin Luther King had a dream.' As you can see we are at the very beginning of our journey to become anti-racist activists. The children then shared that 'black people's skin is not really black color, it's brown', 'Martin Luther King was the leader and he was shot by the bad guys', 'I saw him on my Mom's phone', 'My mom is black.' 'I know Black Lives Matter! I did it with my family and my cousins. We have been reading a book 'Black is a Rainbow Color' by Angela Joy and listening to the song “Blackbird ” by Dionne Farris. We were inviting them to build ramps with unusual materials such as tape and crayons! Look what they came up with! They have been building castles for Pokémon balls. The Sandpiper scientists are interested in ramps, mazes and marble runs. Please help us wish a Happy fifth Birthday to Claire!
